Our commitment
April is committed to making our service accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. We aim to meet level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 across our website and dashboard.
Current compliance status
We consider April to be partially compliant with WCAG 2.1 AA. We have not yet completed a full accessibility audit, and some areas of the service may not meet AA criteria.
Known issues
We are aware of the following accessibility limitations and are actively working to address them:
- Some images and icons on the dashboard do not yet have descriptive alternative text.
- Form fields on some pages may lack explicit ARIA labels for screen readers.
- Colour contrast in some areas of the dashboard may not meet AA contrast ratios.
- The calendar's drag-and-drop appointment rescheduling currently relies on mouse or touch input. A keyboard-equivalent interface is in development.
- We have not yet completed end-to-end testing with assistive technologies (screen readers, voice control, switch devices).
What works well
The following accessibility features are already in place:
- April's primary interface is conversational text via WhatsApp, which works with the assistive technologies supported by the WhatsApp app.
- The website and dashboard use semantic HTML and a responsive layout that scales for zoom and small screens.
- Many of April's core functions (logging bookings, viewing summaries, confirming quarterly MTD submissions) can be performed entirely via text messaging. Some setup steps, such as connecting to HMRC for the first time and subscribing to a paid plan, currently require the dashboard.
Our roadmap
We are addressing accessibility iteratively. Our planned improvements include:
- Running a full automated audit (WAVE / axe DevTools) and addressing all flagged issues.
- Adding alternative text to all images and meaningful icons.
- Adding ARIA labels to all form inputs and interactive controls.
- Auditing and adjusting colour contrast across the dashboard.
- Adding keyboard navigation to the calendar's rescheduling features.
- End-to-end testing with screen readers (NVDA, VoiceOver) on the public pages and dashboard.
We aim to complete the highest-priority items within the next three months.
